Target Audience

Target audience

After looking at different cities I have decided to concentrate on Sheffield, especially after checking the class ratings of the city against the national average. Being the 4th largest city in England whilst also containing an upmarket population of 82% (AB+) the target audience is extremely high disposable income, attracting companies to advertise and furthering my magazine.

Sheffield also homes two universities and 17 colleges therefore it has a large youth population with 20% more 15-24s than the national average, furthering my target audience and my reach.

Billboard Advertisement Initial ideas and try out.

CBS Research into Advertising via Billboards

CBS Outdoors

For my Ancillary task of creating a billboard I have chosen to present this through CBS Outdoors. As a company they have been operating since 1997 and clearly understand the market offering advice and case studies to optimise your method of advertising and marketing. Comprising of the largest amount of outdoor advertising sites and indepth knowledge of consumer attitudes and travel patterns I believe this company can easily give my magazine a boost into the public sector. Regulations imposed by CBS Outdoors:
• Must not include a QR code/NFC tag.
"Advertisements will not be accepted for, or retained on display in the sites managed by CBS Outdoor if in the opinion of CBS Outdoor they:
1. do not comply with the law or incite anyone to break the law
2. do not comply with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) guidance or the UK Code of Non-Broadcast Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketing (CAP Code) which includes regulations regarding advertising, sales promotion and direct marketing
3. do not promote equality of opportunity for all persons irrespective of their race, sex, disability, age, sexual orientation or religion
4. are likely to offend the general travelling public or depict or offend ethnic, religious or other major groups on account of the nature of the product or service being advertised, the wording or design of the advertisement or inference contained therein
5. are likely to be defaced
6. depict men, women or children in a sexual manner, or display nude or semi-nude figures in an overtly sexual context. For example, whilst the use of undressed people in most underwear advertising may be seen as an appropriate context, gratuitous use of an overtly sexual nature will be viewed as unacceptable
7. depict or refer to indecency or obscenity, depict bodily functions or use obscene or distasteful language
8. advertise lap-dancing, gentlemen’s clubs, escort agencies, or massage parlours
9. depict direct and immediate violence to anyone shown in the poster or to anyone looking at the poster
10. condone or provoke anti-social behaviour
11. advertise films which have not been granted permission for public exhibition or which do not show the required certificate except when the name of the cinema is not shown. Films carrying an 18 certificate must also carry the Advertising Viewing (AVC) logo
12. contain images or messages that relate to matters of public controversy and sensitivity
13. are of a political nature calling for the support of a particular viewpoint, policy or action or attacking a member or policies of any legislative, central or local government authority (advertisements are acceptable which simply announce the time, date and place of social activities or of a meeting with the names of the speakers and the subjects to be discussed)
14. contain illustrations which depict, or might reasonably be assumed to depict, quotations from or references to a living person unless the written consent of that person is obtained and is produced to CBS Outdoor. CBS Outdoor will require an indemnity against any action by that person or on that person’s behalf before such illustrations, quotations or references will be accepted
15. use handwriting or illustrations that would suggest the poster has been damaged, defaced, fly posted or subjected to graffiti, after it has been posted.
16. might adversely affect in any way the interest of the site owner e.g. The London Underground, The Docklands Light Railway and all Bus, Tram or Coach company franchise partners (e.g. negative references to the environment)

The size of the advertisement

Actual size: 304.8mm 606mm
Without Border area: 287.8 /589mm

I will have to create my billboard to these specifications.

Magazine Regulation

Levison Inquiry
The Inquiry will examine culture, practises and ethics within the media in order to establish whether or not the British press has too little restraint. There are 4 modules of inquiry consisting of:-

  • Module 1: The relationship between the press and the public and looks at phone-hacking and other potentially illegal behaviour.
  • Module 2: The relationships between the press and police and the extent to which that has operated in the public interest.
  • Module 3: The relationship between press and politicians.
  • Module 4: Recommendations for a more effective policy and regulation that supports the integrity and freedom of the press while encouraging the highest ethical standards.
  • Currently the only regulation in place in terms of magazines and newspapers is self regulation. The Levison Inquiry calls this into question with Lord Justice Leveson saying on the 14th November 2011, “The press provides an essential check on all aspects of public life. That is why any failure within the media affects all of us. At the heart of this Inquiry, therefore, may be one simple question: who guards the guardians?” but this could backfire in the face of free-speech and could impede upon accurate reporting.

When creating my magazine I must take into account these factors that I will have to be self-regulating my content; with the Levison Inquiry further and solid regulation could in be in place in order to have strict guidelines on what content is included.
     National Union of Journalists
"Ensure that information dissemination is honestly conveyed, accurate and fair"
and for all stories to be obtained throguh honest and straightforward means. The Phone Hacking scandal explicitly breached these rules while also the PCC failed to protect the interests of those involved, highlighting the need for less voluntary measures of regulation and solid guidelines to be placed.

In purpose of creating my magazine strict editorial guidelines would be in place to ensure the upmost respect for the magazine but also to protect the interests of the reader.

In purpose of creating my magazine strict editorial guidelines would be in place to ensure the upmost respect for the magazine but also to protect the interests of the reader. This shows that my magazine will be subject to rules and restrictions; so I will refrain from using profanity and nudity in my product so not to arouse complaints about the content and give my magazine a tainted name.

    Chosen Brief

Looking through the briefs I do not feel confident I could make a product I would be proud of using the medium of Film, this has narrowed down the briefs I believe I could do well in. The ones I am currently exploring are:-
     • The first two pages of an original local newspaper (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the newspaper, following the same house style), together with two of the following three options:
  A billboard poster for the newspaper
  A radio advertisement for the newspaper
  Two hyperlinked pages from the paper’s website.

     • A website for a new TV channel (to include a minimum of three hyperlinked pages with original images, audio and video extract), together with two of the following three options:
  A newspaper advertisement for the channel
  A double page spread for a listings magazine, focused on the channel’s launch
  An animated ident sequence for the channel.

     • The first four pages from an original regional magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style), together with two of the following three options:
 A radio advertisement for the magazine
 Two hyperlinked pages from the magazine’s website
 A billboard advertisement for the magazine.

During GCSE and AS I chose to do a Print option and thus I have very strong skills in this medium. Tto disregard these skills and attempt to learn from scratch another medium would take too much time to be able to make a product I am confident of and thus my chosen brief is:-

    13. The first four pages from an original regional magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style), together with two of the following three options:

    • a radio advertisement for the magazine;
    • two hyperlinked pages from the magazine's website;
    • a billboard advertisement for the magazine.
All material for all tasks to be produced by the candidates with the exception of acknowledged non-original sound or image material used in a limited way in video/radio work. For music video, permission should be sought from the artist for use of the audio track.
